About Us

Life After Stroke, Peterborough: A chapter of After StrokeĀ®

Our Group was formed in 2006 as a cooperative initiative of the HKPR District Stroke Coordinator based at PRHC, the Peterborough office of the Heart and Stroke Foundation, and a local social worker.

We operated independently as The Peterborough Stroke Survivors Support Group until October 2009 when we officially became the Peterborough chapter of Stroke Recovery Canada - which has since become After Stroke. This is a program of March of Dimes Canada that helps stroke survivors and their families to regain independence, find much needed support, and learn how to survive & thrive after a stroke. As of September 2010, our name has become Life After Stroke, Peterborough (LASP).

Previously, we met at Northminster United Church, in the north end of Peterborough. Northminster UC is located at 300 Sunset Blvd, one block east of Chemong Road, just south of Walmart. Access to the church is from the parking lot in the back. Though currently closed, our meeting room, as well as the entire church building, is fully wheelchair accessible. We gratefully acknowledge the support that the church provides in the form of excellent meeting facilities, but please note that we are not affiliated with the United Church of Canada, nor are we associated with any political or religious organization. We are simply people who have faced the challenge of a stroke and are now working on living our changed lives to the best of our abilities.

If anything we have experienced along the way can help others who suddenly find themselves on a similar path, we are happy to help. The purpose of our group is mutual support; in short, we exist simply to help each other. Here is a sample of the value that some members have experienced within our Group (Youtube video).

Please join us to meet people who are thriving in the aftermath of a stroke, discuss stroke-related topics and issues, hear relevant guest speakers, or simply to celebrate the success of members ongoing recoveries (including your own!). We currently meet on the 4th Wednesday of each month from 1:00 to 2:30 pm via Zoom due to Covid-19 public health guidelines. For more information, please email Erica, our coordinator, at emugan@marchofdimes.ca.

A single stroke can drastically alter more than one life. While our priority is to help stroke survivors, we welcome caregivers, friends, and family to attend our meetings as well for information, encouragement and support.
